Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle, unclassified in Cloghala (gowran By., Bennettsbridge Ed) is a large castle in repair recorded for Cloghlea in the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Dungarvan. It belonged to Redm[on]d Archdeacon & W[illa]m St. Leger in 1640, yet no exact spot is preserved. The castle may still hide beneath Cloghala’s fields, waiting for a boot, a shovel or a remembered lane to give it back.
Indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Dungarvan in the S part of the N portion of the 17th- townland of Cloghlea, which equates to the modern townland of Cloghala (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The terrier accompanying this Down Survey (1655-6) parish map describes, 'on Cloghlea a large castle in repaire’ and lists ‘Redm[on]d Archdeacon & W[illa]m St. Leger’ as the proprietors in 1640 (NLI MS720). The castle is unlocated within the townland. See attached: KK024-094----_01 extract from Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Dungarvan (Hib.
