Castlefield keeps the last visible trace of a castle that vanished before modern mapping began. The Down Survey still marked Nashtowne, but the 1839 map found no castle at all, suggesting stones, roofs and rooms had already given way to field and memory. Castlefield House may still hold bricks pulled from that lost structure, carrying its shape into ordinary domestic life.

A castle is indicated in Nashtowne townland on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of ‘Gowran’ and in 'Nashtown' on the parish map of Tullohedin (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). This 17th-century townland was subsequently divided into two separate townlands, Castlefield and Crowbally. The castle was located in what became Castlefield townland. It is not indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map or the 1899-1900 revision suggesting it had been levelled by the early 19th century. The early 18th-century Castlefield House, built on or close to the castle site, probably incorporates some of the fabric of the medieval castle.
