Cassestown held a ruined castle stump in 1654, yet no exact spot or surviving wall has been identified. Robnett Purcell owned the place in 1640, and a nineteenth-century house still stands where the castle may have been forgotten. The loss is not merely architectural; it is a gap in the local story, a room removed from the house of memory.

The precise location of this castle within the townland has not been identified. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) there was 'a stump of a Castle out of repaire' in 'Cassistowne' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 56). Robnett Purcell of Borresleagh is listed as proprietor in 1640 (ibid.). Cassestown House, which appears to be nineteenth-century in date, was visited as the possible location of this castle. The landowner, however, knew of no castle in this townland nor of any tradition of a castle associated with this house.
