Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Carrickmakeegan, a castle on the southwest shore of Gardice Lough, left no stones behind by the mid-twentieth century. Local memory keeps the name alive while the land itself has forgotten the shape of the walls. The lake may have taken the castle, or the castle may never have been more than a story told beside the water.
There is a local tradition of a castle at Carrickmakeegan on the SW shore of Gardice Lough (Blaney 1944, No. 135), but no part of it survived then. There is no other evidence of such a castle, and the location is not known. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 21 February, 2017
