Ballymore in County Mayo once held a castle with a bawn large enough to share, yet no exact ruin or marker still identifies the place. The Strafford Inquisition recorded a quarter of the castle and half the bawn, suggesting a working defensive house rather than a decorative fantasy. The castle may have fallen, been buried or simply stopped being called a castle, but it was real enough to divide and occupy.

A castle is listed in Ballymore townland in the Strafford Inquisition of Co. Mayo: '…1 carton in the qr of Bellanamore, and 1/4 part of the castle and one half of the bawn there of…' (O'Sullivan 1958, 113). The exact location where this castle stood has not been established.
