What is recorded here

Ballygarrane still holds the ghost of a castle that men destroyed beyond repair before 1654. It vanished so completely that even Grovestown House, built generations later, cannot claim its stones. The land keeps the shape of the loss while refusing to show the place where the walls fell.
Castle depicted in this area on the Strafford Survey of 1637 (NLI 16.I.17[13]) and mentioned in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'on the lands of Ballyngarrane, The ould Walls of a destroyed castle irrepairable' (Simington 1934, vol.2, 90). The castle was provisionally located to Grovestown House, however, this is a two-storey early to mid-18th-century L-plan farmhouse with no remains of any earlier fabric. The castle remains unlocated within the townland.
