What is recorded here
Ballycahill Castle vanished before it was ever drawn, leaving behind only a name and a hidden field. In 1586 Peyton wrote Ballykahell Castle in Greankoeragh, but no marker remains to show whether it was a hall, a tower or a mistake. The absence makes the castle larger: rooms without walls, stairs without numbers, a whole life reduced to one line in a book.
The precise location of Ballycahill Castle has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 185) recorded the following details about Ballycahill; 'Not marked. Ballykahell C[astle]. in Greankoeragh, 1586 (Peyton, p. 80)'.
