Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Ballyboy Castle has vanished from ordinary sight, yet the Down Survey still calls it a castle on a mount. That is enough to believe the ground remembers a shape people stopped seeing.
Not visible at ground level. Described in the Down Survey as 'a castle on a mount' (Loeber 1988, 26-30). (O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 93) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
