Castlefield in Ballybar Lower still carries the memory of a vanished castle, though no wall or gate remains for a stranger to touch. Neighbourhood people pointed to the spot long before the field lost its name, suggesting the building resisted forgetting even after it resisted decay. The castle may have been a small stronghold, a temporary camp, or a house that outgrew its owners. It disappeared completely, yet the land kept repeating its shape in every local answer about the field.

According to the OS Letters (1839, 16) 'Castlefield is a local name for a field in Ballybar Lower townland, which got the name from a castle that formerly stood in it.
