Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle is one of two castles recorded in Ballintrane, though no trace of its walls or chambers has survived to mark the exact spot. It may have stood as a small defensive tower or a modest residence for a local family, but the earth has taken back its shape. What remains is a gap on the landscape where a building once claimed attention, reminding us that even forgotten places shaped the lives of those who passed them.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Second of two castles recorded here on Down Survey (1655-6) map. The exact location of the castle is unknown.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
