Ballynsmalle appears in a 1574 Galway castle list held by Ric oge, yet no stones or marker remain for Ballinsmaul today. The name resists identification, suggesting a building so ordinary or destroyed it vanished before memory could hold it. What is missing is not a gap in evidence but a shape of loss: a castle reduced to a line in a list, a list reduced to a footnote, a footnote forgotten.

In the list of castles in Galway, compiled in 1574, is one at 'Ballynsmalle' in the barony of Leitrim, then in the possession of 'Ric oge fiz Ric fiz Moyler' (Nolan 1901, 111).
