Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Assagart castle vanished before human memory, leaving only a marker on the Down Survey map and Robert Haye's 120 acres in Kilgarvan parish. The land may still hide its bones beneath turf or farm lanes, waiting for someone to stop looking for facts and start listening for the shape of what was lost.
A castle is marked on the Down Survey map at Assagart in Kilgarvan parish in NLI (ms 725; microfilm P 7384m N 6380), but there is no further evidence of it. According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) Robert Haye owned 120 acres at Assagart and 120 acres at Rasillagh (Simington 1953, 88). Its precise location is not known. See the attached section from the Down Survey (1656-8) parish map (N at right) reproduced courtesy of the National Library of Ireland (Ms 725) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 5 November, 2012 Amended: 10 February, 2014
