Castle stood on level pastureland at the foot of the Slieve Aughty Mountains, holding a gun loop beside its doorway and resisting every claim to forget it. Shane Oge fitz John fitz Ed owned Corbally in 1574, yet the stone still marks the boundary between human ambition and earthly loss. An 18th-century house swallowed the tower, then decayed until only the ground floor and part of the first floor remained. The mountain does not disclose its meaning; it returns what it can bear and takes the rest.
On level pastureland at the NW foot of the Slieve Aughty Mountains. According to Fahey (1893, 319), this townland was previously known as 'Corbally', which ties in with the 1574 list of castles in Co. Galway where 'Corbally' castle was then in the possession of 'Shane Oge fitz John fitz Ed' (Nolan 1901, 113). All that survives of this rectangular tower house (L 8.7m, Wth 6m), which was subsequently incorporated into the easternmost of two castellated wings of an 18th-century country house (GA114-052002-), itself now in ruins, is the ground floor and portions of the 1st floor. Apart from a slight base-batter to the side-walls, the only architectural features noted were the pointed arch doorway in the SE wall and part of a single-light window on the 1st floor of the same wall. The doorway has a gun loop in its E jamb. A church (GA114-049----) lies c. 240m to the N. (Bence-Jones 1978, 66)
