Castle rises thirty-six metres across and three and a half metres high in Moat Town, a flat-topped grass mound set among trees. Its slight fosse marks the edge of a place built to be seen before it was built to be entered. In a level county, that much raised earth still commands attention. The mound does not need walls to remind people it was made for watchfulness, judgment or memory.

Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape. Raised subcircular, flat-topped and grass-covered mound (dims of top 21 NW-SE; 18m NE-SW; diam. of base 36m NW-SE; H 3.5m) with some trees defined by a slight fosse (Wth of top 6-7m; ext. D 0.3-0.4m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
