Castle (in ruins)

Situated on a low rise of natural rock outcrop in undulating countryside. According to the OS Letters the castle of 'baile an Bharuin' was called after Purcell, baron of Loaghma (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 180). No visible remains at ground level. The castle at Baronstown was likely held by the Purcell family, who were prominent in the area during the medieval period. It is remembered for its association with the Barony of Loaghma and reflects the historical presence of Gaelic lordships in the region.
