Ardagh Castle stood on a high rock outcrop with a commanding view in every direction, but human hands or time have since levelled it into a grass-covered mound of rubble. Lewis wrote in 1837 that a small fragment only existed, suggesting the structure had already surrendered much of its shape before the surveyors arrived. The remaining stone-faced terracing to the south hints at deliberate building rather than natural collapse, yet the castle itself has become a landscape feature, remembered more through absence than presence.

Castle now levelled, leaving subrectangular grass-covered mound (H 1.3m; 3.2m N-S; 6.8m E-W) of rubble; some stone-faced earthen terracing to S. Mentioned by Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 650) 'of Ardagh Castle...a small fragment only exists. O Driscoll castle (O Murchadha 1985, 178).
