What is recorded here

Gortnamackan was a tower house in County Galway, built for the kind of people who needed walls high enough to keep out neighbours and roofs steep enough to shed rain. It stands as a castle now, but it began as a household, a defensible kitchen and a place where someone watched the road. The name preserves more than stone: it marks the field, the family and the reason the tower rose where it did.
