Castle Connell sits on a steep rock above the Shannon, marked by broken arches and two surviving tower shadows. It has endured since 1199, when John gave William de Burgh knight’s fees to build a fortress there. The castle outlived O'Brien destruction, Bruce invasion and Bourke ownership before General Ginckell blew it up in 1691. Even Limerick felt the report, but the rock still holds the shape of what men tried to erase.
