What is recorded here

Cashelbane Fort is a ruined triangular enclosure on Crockaughrim Hill in County Donegal, where a stone wall once rose above an earthen bank but now barely reaches knee height. The western stones disappeared entirely, likely carried away to build the nearby field boundary, leaving the ancient fort exposed beneath ordinary farmland. Heather still covers the interior, marking a place where human ambition was partially erased by practical necessity.
Internal Dimensions 75m N-S, 85m E-W. An almost triangular area slightly SW of the summit of Crockaughrim Hill enclosed by a largely destroyed stone wall surviving up to .75m in height. In places, the wall appears to have been built on an earthen bank and on the W side the stone wall has been almost entirely removed, probably to construct the field boundary/townland boundary which crosses the site here. There are two gaps in the E side either or both of which could be modern. The interior is heather-covered. Situated on high rough terrain, the site is known as Cashelbane Fort. There is a mound (DG011-048----) 70m to ENE. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
