Calf Island Middle

Calf Island Middle is a tiny islet in Roaringwater Bay where a coastal promontory fort still stands because the sea finished what human hands began. The headland itself forms three sides of the defense, while a bank or rampart across the narrow neck completed the enclosure during the Iron Age or early medieval period. The island’s small size and distance from mainland fields may have spared the earthworks from ploughs and development, preserving a stronghold that once watched a crowded archipelago now reduced to memory and tide.
