Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cairn is a large flat-topped Neolithic structure in Skeagh, County Cork, built around 3000 BC. It measures 19 meters across and 2 meters high, with a separate ring barrow twenty meters north. The stones have watched midwinter darkness for millennia, perhaps marking festival nights when people gathered beneath a sky full of stars. They still stand in the forest, waiting for curiosity and care.
Within a dense coniferous forest, on the summit of Sheagh Hill. A 'low cairn of stones' which had 'been ploughed over and planted' was noted to the S of another cairn (CO141-013002-) in 1960 (UCC). No trace of the cairn could be found at this location. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
