What is recorded here

Cairn was a small stone mark beside a cross in County Carlow, recorded in 1839 but never properly seen again. It may have been a leacht, a wayside marker for travellers or a border post between fields. The stones are gone now, perhaps taken for wall building or scattered by ploughs, but the cross still stands where the cairn once caught the light.

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Mentioned in OS Letters (1839, 91) as 'cairn or heap of stones' adjacent to cross (CW022-016----). Cairn not located, only rock outcrop and field clearance noted. Possibly a leacht or wayside cairn.
