What is recorded here

Cairn in County Carlow is a low mound about twenty metres wide that still shows stones beneath a partly levelled field boundary. People built it, remembered it, then took most of it away for other uses. What remains is a bulge in the land, holding the shape of an older hand.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked on 1908 'OS 6-inch' map as low mound (max. diam. c. 20m). Bulge with stones visible below foundation of partly levelled old field boundary. Possibly cairn, most of which has been removed.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
