Mullaghorn is a quiet hill in County Mayo, but the name itself may be a mistake born from a pencil line on an old map. A careless translator may have written cairn above the place when they only meant to explain that Mullaghorn could be read as hill of the cairn. The real cairn may never have existed, yet the error still stands like a ghost marker, proving that even false names can shape what people believe they see.

This record is based on an annotation "cairn" written in pencil above the placename Mullaghorn on an OPW copy of the 1838 6-inch OS map. This may simply have been a reference to a translation of the Irish name as "hill of the cairn", rather than an indication of the location of a cairn. There is no trace of a cairn in this area.
