Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cairn is a Cavan townland where a prehistoric stone structure still stands beside Carn Lough, marking the place as old before it became property. The McKiernan Clan held the land for centuries, and even after royal grants moved it to Scottish groom John Achmootie and then James Craig, a McKernan lease returned part of the place to the old family. Stones were raised for a mill, trees were cut, a walled house appeared, and horses grazed near the new works. The name changed through English spellings while the lough, lanes and field boundary kept the older shape.
Marked 'Carnagarvie' on OS Fair Plan and 'Carnagarve' on 1836 ed. Not marked on subsequent eds. Situated on the summit of a drumlin hill. Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
