Caherhone: An oval enclosure is marked on the first edition of the OS map at this location, and on the second edition this is annotated 'remains of'. It is recorded as 'Cathair Chon' in the OSNB (Drummod, 4). The site survives as a severely disturbed and much modified caher. Its interior is largely obscured by a fill of field clearance material, and it has been used as a rubbish dump. The enclosing wall has been rebuilt in places, and it is now sharply angled at SE and SW.
The external height of the surviving stretches of the enclosing element averages 1.2m. Its inner face cannot now be traced except for a possible stretch at N, where the wall is 3m wide. The wall appears to consist of a rubble core faced externally and internally with irregularly shaped slabs and boulders set in rough courses. A number of upright slabs in the N half of the interior may relate to the site's use as a ceallúnach (KE098-005001-) (local information).
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 618. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Caherhone, Spunkane is an oval-shaped early-medieval ringfort, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries AD, based on its form and the historical context of such structures in Ireland. The name "Caherhone" derives from "Cathair Chon," meaning "Con's fort," suggesting a possible historical or legendary figure associated with the site, though specific folklore or historical events linked to it are not well documented.
