What is recorded here

Burry Port Lighthouse was built in 1842 on the western breakwater of a new coal harbour, with Trinity House approval. The port later changed from an export dock to Carmarthenshire's marina and the light fell out of use, but its white stone tower and metal lantern still mark that industrial shoreline.

Why it was built

Burry Port developed a new harbour to replace Pembrey and completed its eastern floating dock around 1840. The breakwater light followed two years later to guide vessels serving a port that exported coal from the nearby valleys.

People and work

No individual architect is named, but the harbour authority obtained permission from Trinity House. Dock workers, crews and coal communities depended on the light as ships entered and left the breakwater arms.

How it changed

Coal exporting declined and the dock became a marina, requiring dredging for its new use. The lighthouse itself is now disused, so its role has changed from active harbour equipment to a visible record of the old port.

What survives

The round tower is built of whitewashed rubble stone. A steel door, stair opening, bracketed metal walkway and many-sided lantern with a domed roof preserve the practical form of the nineteenth-century harbour light.

Why it mattered

The lighthouse connects Burry Port's coal-exporting growth with its later leisure harbour. It remains a compact landmark showing where maritime trade, engineering and the valley industries once met.
