Burnt mound in Woodfield

In pasture, located on the S bank of River Trimoge, overlooked by low ridge c. 50m to SW. Heat-shattered sandstone fragments in a charcoal-rich matrix are visible in section of the river bank at a point where the river bank has been cut back to create a cattle watering hole. The layer (D 0.2-0.4m) of burnt material is visible beneath a layer (D 0.1-0.15m) of sod on both the E and W side of the U-shaped cut away area (8m N-S; 8.5m E-W) in the river bank. A Bronze Age burnt mound, dating to approximately 2000–800 BCE; its significance lies in its association with thermal activity, possibly for cooking, water heating, or ritual purposes, and as an indicator of early human settlement in the area.
