Burnt mound in Woodbrook

On a level landscape, and excavated (03E1841) in the course of a road project (site 7). Subcircular layer (dims 8m x 7m; max. T 0.35m) of charred organic and burnt stone material overlying a clay stratum which directly overlay the natural subsoil. There was no evidence of a trough, but charcoal from the spread produced C14 dates between 1620 and 1310 BC (www.nra.ie).
