Burnt mound in Whitestown

Situated in a N-S valley with a N-S stream c. 100m to the E. Archaeological monitoring and testing (06E0163) in advance of laying a water-pipe identified a fulacht fia (Moloney 2006), which was later excavated (06E0281). A small spread of burnt mound material (dims. 1.2m x 0.6m; T 7cm) was associated with a pit (dims. 1.6m x 0.6m; D 0.15m), while a second pit (dims. 4m x 1.48m; D 0.36m) extended beyond the excavation, as probably does most of the burnt mound. Fulacht fia, dating to the Early to Middle Bronze Age. These sites are significant as they provide insight into prehistoric cooking or industrial practices, though their exact function remains debated.
