What is recorded here

Located on a gentle S-facing slope at the bottom of a steeper S-facing slope, and c. 400m NE of where an E-W stream enters the estuary of the River Blackwater. It was excavated (E3570) as the W part of Area 6 during 2006 on the S side of the existing road as part of the N25 road re-alignment scheme. This was a shallow spread of broken and burnt stone (dims. 9m x 8m; T 0.1m) with no associated features. Burnt mound (WA037-057----) is c. 80m to the E. (Hegarty 2007c, 18) Hegarty, L. Burnt mound in Shanacoole is a Neolithic ritual or industrial site, dating to the third millennium BCE. Its location near a river estuary suggests it may have been part of a broader network of early agricultural or ceremonial activity in the region.
