What is recorded here

Situated on a gently undulating landscape. A gradiometer survey (17R0082) by J. M. Leigh Surveys identified numerous potential archaeological features in an extensive area (c. 20 ha). Targeted archaeological testing (17E0354) by David Murphy of many of these proved that they are either natural or agricultural in origin (excavations.ie 2017:148). Two potential archaeological areas were identified and probed. This is a concentration (diam. 4m plus; T 0.1-0.2m) of heat-shattered stone in matrix of black charcoal-rich sandy silt. Burnt mound in Kilkeelan is a Bronze Age ritual or industrial site, characterized by the presence of heat-shattered stones and associated features. Its significance lies in providing evidence of early land use and possible ceremonial activity in the local landscape.
