Burnt mound in Brigown

A spread of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil was identified during archaeological testing in advance of a housing development on the outskirts of Mitchelstown. Subsequent excavation revealed a layer (3m x 2m; D 0.08m) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil that covered four similar circular stake-holes (0.07m x 0.065m x 0.14m) with vertical sides and rounded bases. The excavator suggested that the stake-holes might represent the remains of a wind-break structure.
