Burnt mound in Aghamore (mohill By., Roosky Ed)

Situated at the bottom a gentle E-facing slope and at the edge of a raised peat bog that extends off to the E and S. First identified in centre-line testing (05E0983) for a new line of the N4 (O’Connor et al. 2005, 42), and later fully excavated (E003310) as a part of Aghamore 2. Excavation recorded five spreads of burnt mound material, other smaller spreads and two kilns. This consists of a burnt stone spread (dims 5m x 2.5m; D 0.05-0.1m) which was partly overlaid by deposits with modern material that is interpreted as upcast from an adjacent drain. Burnt mound in Aghamore; likely dates to the Bronze Age. Its location near a peat bog suggests it may have been used for ritual or industrial purposes, common features of such sites in the period.
