Situated on top of a low natural hillock in undulating countryside. Roughly circular flat topped mound (diam. 15.5m E-W; 18.8m N-S; H 1.5m) defined by a scarp with external fosse visible at E only. Large boulders along S perimeter of site probably field clearance debris. The site is the result of the scarping of a natural hillock to produce a flat topped mound. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Burial mound in Ballybritt is a roughly circular, flat-topped Bronze Age cairn with a surrounding fosse, likely a funerary or ceremonial site. Its construction and positioning suggest a regional tradition of mound-building associated with early burial practices in Ireland.
