Burial in Mountgale

In pasture. In 1950 human bones (representing c. 14 individuals) were uncovered when the inner bank of a bivallate enclosure (KK018-022----) was being levelled as part of Land Project works (NMI Correspondence Files, 12 August 1950). These burials (KK018-022001-) were c. 0.6m below the surface along the E side of the inner bank (ibid.). It was noted that, 'the bones and skulls were in different positions as if buried where they had fallen...Th bones crumbled and were crushed by the bull-dozer. The undamaged bones were collected and buried in one spot by the workmen' (ibid.). It was thought locally that the burials may be of famine victims who were found on the adjacent public road (NMI Correspondence Files, 16 October 1950).
