Burial in Churchtown (shelburne By.)

Burial

What is recorded here

Located at the W edge of the flat, low-lying landscape of the Hook peninsula at Little Cove. In 2000 human remains resting on bedrock (D 0.55m) were discovered at the edge of a low cliff, and the exposed scull was excavated (00E0872) (Brady and Kelleher 2002). Continued erosion necessitated the complete excavation (05E0914) of what proved to be a single burial (Ó Drisceoil 2008) of a young male (aged c. 21-25) in a large grave-cut oriented NW-SE with the head at NW. A C14 determination of AD 1650-1950 was returned for what is probably the hurried burial of a shipwreck victim. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 31 March, 2014
