Burial in Breastagh

Located adjacent to an ogham stone (MA015-018001-). When the ogham stones was discovery in the late 1800s, it was prostrate on the ground, lying ‘over what seem to be grave’, visible as a ‘slight elevation marked by lines of stones, lying north and south’ (Ferguson 1870-9, 201-206). A cavity at the S end of the grave was identified as the socket in which the ogham stone once stood. No other details of this possible grave were recorded. A Neolithic or early Christian burial, likely associated with a cist or simple interment, dating to between the 4th century BCE and 7th century CE. Its proximity to an ogham stone suggests a possible funerary or commemorative function in a prehistoric or early medieval landscape.
