What is recorded here

Two rectangular graveyards adjoin on flat, poorly drained Cork land, holding the ruined parish church of Aglishdrinagh and a vault dated 1811 though built earlier by William Harrison. Henry Harrison of Castle Harrison rests beneath the table tomb, surrounded by railed plots for his family and the Harold-Barry's of Ballyvonare. The eastern graveyard, enclosed later by the Harrison family, has lost its markers, leaving only empty soil and worn earthen banks to remember them.
In flat, poorly drained land. Two adjoining rectangular graveyards (W graveyard c. 45m SW-NE; c. 45m NW-SE / E graveyard c. 40m SW-NE; c. 45m NW-SE), enclosed by low, worn earthen banks; ruin of parish church of Aglishdrinagh (14395) in westernmost graveyard. Large burial vault occupies approximate position of E end of church; table tomb atop vault inscribed 'Henry Harrison, Castle Harrison'; vault has date of 1811, but, according to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 2, 88), built by William Harrison in early 18th century; now surrounded by family burials in railed plots. Elsewhere in graveyard marked burials are 19th-century in date; 'only a very few other families are interred...the principal being that of the Harold-Barry's of Ballyvonare' (ibid., vol. 1, 29). According to Grove White (ibid., 28), 'in recent times the Harrison family enclosed a further space of about equal size'; this must be easternmost graveyard though this is shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map; area now devoid of burial markers. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
