Burial Ground

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Death and memory belong to Kilmurry House, where a circular burial ground stands above the Blackwater Valley. Its mock-crenellated wall and ornamental gate make the dead into a housekeeping affair, dressed for the living rather than hidden from them.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular field (diam. c. 40m) in demesne of Kilmurry House (14903) and named 'Graveyard'; named 'Burial Ground' on 1905 and 1935 OS 6-inch maps. In level pasture, above S-facing slope overlooking Blackwater Valley. Circular area (diam. c. 40m) enclosed by well-built wall of masonry, topped with mock crenellations. Access through ornamental gate on W side. Interior densely overgrown; three low mounds noted but no burial markers discernible. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
