What is recorded here
Ballyclough Burial Gd is a rectangular graveyard in County Cork where the earliest surviving headstone marks a death in 1782. Its overgrown earthen bank still stands beside a ruined church, while mature trees shade low uninscribed markers scattered toward the north and west. The place preserves ordinary loss long after named events faded from memory.
On S side of road. Rectangular graveyard (c. 62m SW-NE; c. 50m NW-SE) enclosed by overgrown earthen bank; entered by piered gate near W end of N side. Ruin of church (14435) near SE corner. On 1842 OS 6-inch map only NW corner (c. 22m max. SW-NE; c. 38m max. NNW-SSE) marked, named 'Grave Yard' - church not shown. Interior planted with some mature trees, recently cleared of undergrowth and grassed over. Scatter of headstones located from centre of N boundary towards W and NW sides of enclosure; low uninscribed gravemarkers throughout, concentrated to N and W of centre. Earliest headstone noted dates to 1782.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
