Burial Ground

Graveyard

What is recorded here

On top of a steep rounded hillock in steeply undulating countryside. On the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map the medieval church (KK014-042001-) of Kilmademoge is located on the N edge of a oval area (dims. c. 30m N-S; c. 35m E-W) annotated 'Burial Ground' which is outlined by a dashed line, this indicates that the burial ground was not physically enclosed. The OS Letters (1839) refer to it as, 'a small burying ground on the south [of the church]' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 36 (12)). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 463) the graveyard was, 'walled in many years ago by the Kilkenny Board of Guardians', at which time it appears to have been enlarged (dims. c. 32m N-S; c. 43m E-W), with the church now N of centre within the sub-oval shaped enclosing element.
