Burial Ground

In pasture, located on rising ground, fall of ground immediately to W towards Ballymore Lough, which is 100m to W. Kildermot church (MA040-074001-) is visible directly opposite on the W shore of the lake. The original nature of this enclosure is uncertain; it may have been a rath, which was modified and reused in the 19th century as a burial ground (MA040-088002-). It is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure, and on the 1922 edition as a polygonal walled enclosure (diam. c. 40-45m); on both editions it is named ‘Burial Ground’. The outline of the original roughly circular enclosure (c. 46m N−S; c. 42m E−W) is now barely discernible. The W half is roughly defined by a stone wall, most likely 19th-century in date. This wall originally continued around the E half of the enclosure, but was removed in the 20th-century when the burial ground was extended to the E. A low curving rise, overlain by 19th and 20th-century graves, now indicates the E arc of the enclosure. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 June 2020
