Burial ground in Plaster (dundalk Upr By; Barronstown Par.)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Mortons in Plaster, Barronstown Par. is a burial ground hidden inside a flat field beside a marsh. Local story claims the graveyard still lies beneath the soil, waiting for rain or ploughwork to reveal its shape. The claim is not certainty, but it gives the field a sudden depth: ordinary grass may be covering a whole neighbourhood of the dead.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Local tradition of graveyard in flat field beside marsh. (CLAJ 1930, 176)
