Burial ground in Ardnehue

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Ardnehue still claims an ancient burial ground beside its medieval settlement, though no grave marker or trench remains visible. The land may have swallowed whole families before roads or kingdoms existed, reducing flesh and memory to soil. People walked past that hidden depth for centuries, unaware they were crossing a chamber where the dead waited without walls or witness.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 According to Malcomson (JRSAI 1864, 118) 'reputed to have been in very distant times, the site of a burial ground'. Adjacent to medieval settlement site (CW008-051----). No visible surface traces.
A Neolithic passage tomb; significant as part of a broader network of early ceremonial and burial sites in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
