Burial Ground (Disused)

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Inside the ancient ringfort near Cartron, rough limestone markers still stand in north-south rows, marking east-west graves that waited for a proper churchyard. Local memory holds that neighbours buried their dead within the fortress walls until a new graveyard opened beside St Patrick's RC church a kilometre away. The fortress became a temporary witness to regional change, preserving local death before religious practice moved the community eastward.
Within a ringfort (GA030-104----). The burials are indicated by rough limestone grave-markers arranged in rows running N-S, indicating graves aligned E-W. Some stone-lined graves are also visible. According to local information, the interior of the ringfort was used as the local burial ground until the graveyard, adjacent to St Patrick's RC church, was opened in Cartron td., 1 km to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
