What is recorded here
Disused burial ground on a hill crest in County Cork, marked Grave Yard on the 1842 map and crowded with upright sandstone slabs. Grove White recorded that it sometimes received unbaptised children, while local memory also shaped a vanishing stone beneath a whitethorn tree. The pasture holds both facts and fantasy, with dead children, cattle cure and a missing church angle woven into one rough stone field.
Named 'Grave Yard' on 1842 OS 6-inch map; 'Burial Ground (Disused)' on 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on crest of hill. Raised rectangular area (34m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by scarp (H 0.4m) to E, S and W; field fence to N. Interior overgrown; surface rough and uneven, crowded with scatter of sandstone slabs set on edge. According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 4, 244), used sometimes as burial ground for unbaptised children. He (ibid.) was informed of, but did not see, a blue elliptical stone 'about the size of a mangel' known as the 'Vanishing Stone' which was venerated as relic of St Molaga; said to always return to same position under whitethorn tree if removed; used to cure cattle. Stone not located. Possible church (14465) in NW angle.
