Bunratty Castle was built in the late 13th century by the MacNamara family, Lords of Hy-Many, and later held by the de Burghs, also known as the Earls of Clare. It is important as one of the best-preserved Gaelic-style castles in Ireland and now serves as a major tourist attraction and museum.
