Bullaun stone in Teesan

Located in the garden of a house. A roughly square, smooth-surfaced block of sandstone (max. dim. c. 0.5m; H 0.35-0.4m) with somewhat rounded corners and a flat base. A circular hollow (diam. 0.2m; D 0.12m) is cut into the centre of the upper surface; the sides of the hollow slope inwards gently to a flat base. The exact provenance of the stone is unknown; it was moved here from an unknown location in Ardtrasna townland or Carnagark townland, c. 10km NW of its current location. Likely dating to the early medieval period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual or symbolic purposes, possibly associated with Christian or pre-Christian traditions. The hollow may have been used for anointing with holy water or as part of a ritual site.
