Bullaun stone in Lissananny Beg

In a letter, dated 1960, from Mr T. M. O'Dowd to the NMI 'an ancient well, consisting of a...carved limestone basin...' is described near the edge of Lissananny bog (NMI). This bullaun stone has not been precisely located and it is possible that it is in that part of Lissananny Beg townland that is on OS 6-inch map 39. Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often associated with holy wells and used for ritual purification or as pilgrimage sites. These stones may also have earlier prehistoric functions, possibly linked to water worship or healing traditions.
